Best facial aftercare: First 48 Hours Do’s & Don’ts
By Skin Boutique by Jama | August 6, 2026
Our #1 rule after your Custom Facial for your needs is simple: keep your skin calm for 48 hours. One client told us we did “a great deep extraction, ” and that’s exactly why we want you avoiding heat, sweat, and strong actives right away. In Johns Creek, that calm window protects your glow so you keep seeing the kind of “refreshed” results people mention the same day.
Quick reminder for the drive home from Johns Creek Commons: keep hands off your face, skip the car visor mirror makeup touch-ups if you can, and let your skin breathe. If you have errands after State Bridge Road and Peachtree Parkway, think “low heat, low friction, light hydration.”
The first 24 to 48 hours: protect the work we just did
Your Custom Facial for your needs is a 90-minute, step-by-step session where we assess your skin and then choose what fits that day, cleansing, exfoliation, and targeted masks included. A lot of people tell us they notice an immediate difference after, like “fresh and hydrated, ” or that their skin feels “clean and rejuvenated.” Aftercare is how you keep that feeling instead of accidentally irritating it away.
Do this today
- Cleanse gently tonight. Lukewarm water only, no scrubs, no cleansing brushes.
- Moisturize with something soothing and simple. Think hydration and barrier support, not “tingly.”
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ the next morning. Johns Creek sun and heat can sneak up fast, even on “cloudy” days.
- If you really need makeup, wait until the next day when possible. If you can’t, keep it light and non-comedogenic.
Skip these for 48 hours: heavy exercise, saunas, hot yoga, hot baths, and long hot showers. Heat and sweat can stir up redness and can push congestion right back into pores, especially if we did extractions.
And pause your actives. We generally recommend holding retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, exfoliating pads, and strong acne spot treatments for 48 to 72 hours unless your esthetician told you otherwise. If your skin is acne-prone or sensitive, that “quiet time” matters even more.
Days 3 to 7: keep the glow, don’t pick at the “almost”
If you’re the type to lean into the mirror and “fix” something, this is your gentle warning. Don’t pick. That tiny bump or flake is usually your skin settling, and digging at it can turn a short-lived issue into a mark that hangs around.
A lot of our Johns Creek clients tell us people comment on their skin right after they leave. We love that. We also want you keeping that same energy a week later, like the client who said, “A week later my skin is still radiating.” The basics do the heavy lifting.
What to keep doing all week
- SPF every single morning. Reapply if you’re outside for long stretches.
- Hydrate lightly but consistently. In humid Johns Creek summers, your skin often does better with a lighter moisturizer plus SPF than a heavy occlusive layer.
- Change your pillowcase once or twice. It’s an easy way to reduce random congestion.
- Keep workouts clean. If you exercise after the first 48 hours, cleanse soon after and avoid letting sweat sit.
Spring pollen in Johns Creek can make skin feel extra reactive. If you’re itchy or flush easily, stay on the gentler side that week and keep your sunscreen simple and fragrance-light.
A simple product routine that keeps professional facial treatments working
You don’t need a 10-step routine to protect a great facial. You need the right two or three steps, done consistently. Several of our first-timers mention we explain everything as we go and we don’t push products. We keep that same energy after your appointment too.
The 2-step “on-the-go” routine
Morning: gentle cleanse or just a quick rinse if you’re dry, then SPF 30+.
Night: gentle cleanse, then moisturizer. That’s it for the first couple of days.
What to look for on labels
- Cleanser: “gentle, ” “hydrating, ” and fragrance-light
- Serum: hyaluronic acid or a calming, barrier-friendly formula
- SPF: broad-spectrum 30+ that you’ll actually wear daily
If we gave you specific product steps after your appointment, follow those first. They’re based on what we saw during your skin assessment and what your skin was ready for that day.

When to reach out to us (and when it’s just normal settling)
A little pinkness right after a facial can be normal, especially if we did exfoliation or extractions. Mild tightness can happen too if you’re used to richer products and we just cleared things out. What we don’t want is you silently worrying at home.
“She gave thorough and detailed recommendation on what I should do to maintain a glowing and healthy looking skin.”

Reach out if: you have swelling that’s getting worse, intense burning, hives, or anything that feels “not right” for your skin. Let us know what you used at home (cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, makeup), and we’ll help you troubleshoot quickly.
We’re easy to get to in the Johns Creek Commons shopping center, and we see clients coming in from Duluth, Suwanee, Alpharetta, Peachtree Corners, Roswell, and Norcross for consistent skin care. If you loved your results and want to keep building on them, we’ll talk through timing for your next visit based on what your skin is doing now.
